It’s been awhile, but I’m back in Des Moines for classes. So far it’s been a really weird year for me, not in terms of classes though. I haven’t been struggling at all with assignments, or exams, or anything really. What I’ve really been struggling with is family. This past summer was the first time I had been on my own for a long period of time.
When my internship ended, I didn’t go straight home. In fact, when I did finally make my way home, I only stayed for a night. I had to attend two funerals with family shortly after. It’s weird to feel so disconnected from my family. I’ve been so busy with work and school that I haven’t been able to go home to visit. I’m planning to take off work for Thanksgiving and to miss some class to visit home.
What I’m Up To Now
I’m currently taking 18 credits of classes and working 28 hours a week to keep up with rent and interest on my student loans. I don’t want to say I’m overwhelmed, but I will say it’s been really hard. Some days I come home from school and work and I feel like everything is so hopeless. But other days I’ll get back and feel so happy that I have some time to myself.
I guess that’s just part of being a college student, you go through a roller coaster of emotions and responsibilities. Sometimes all you want to do is sleep, other times you content with whatever. (Whether it’s laying on the couch binge-watching a TV show you’ve already completed or just looking at houses you won’t be able to afford until long after graduation). What I’m trying to say is that I’ve been going through a lot of changes in my life. I’m going through a lot of firsts, like renting my first apartment, having a part-time job outside of school, and owning my own car.
Plans for the Rest of the Year
I’ve been trying to get everything done as soon as I can and not stress as much about those things anymore. For example, I want to graduate a semester early (in December 2018 rather than in May 2018) so that I don’t have to pay as much for schooling. It’s kind of weird because I’m running out of classes I need to take, and I need to take a lot more fillers to earn all of the 124 credits I need to graduate. I’ve figured out that if I take a J-Term this January, 18 credits worth of classes this Spring, and 18 credits worth of classes this upcoming fall, I’ll be able to graduate on time with all my requirements. To get an idea about what I’m talking about here is the check-sheet of requirements for my major and minor. I hope everything I need to graduate will be done by the time I’m projecting it to, and that there won’t be any surprises last minute that I’ll have to address.
